روایت مشهوری میان دوستداران موسیقی قدیمی ایران نقل می‌شود که محمدرضا شاه پهلوی با شنیدن ترانه‌ی «ای خدا حرفی بزن» از زنده‌یاد عارف بسیار تحت تأثیر قرار گرفت و اشک در چشمانش نشست.

شاید دلیل تأثیر این ترانه، فقط صدای عارف نبود؛ بلکه حس عمیق تنهایی، دعا، بغض و درماندگی‌ای بود که در جمله‌ی ساده‌ی «ای خدا حرفی بزن» پنهان شده است. این ترانه بیشتر شبیه یک فریاد آرام است؛ فریادی از دل کسی که دیگر از آدم‌ها جوابی نگرفته و رو به خدا کرده است.
