BREAKING NEWS: TRUMP: UKRAINE NEEDS NEW PRESIDENT. I examine Donald Trump’s statement that Ukraine should get “a new president” after Volodymyr Zelensky criticized the reported U.S.-Russia diesel arrangement as a weak decision. The immediate stakes are not merely political: Kyiv says it is prepared to stop striking Russian oil refineries if Moscow stops attacking Ukrainian energy infrastructure, while Russian missile and drone attacks continue to damage Ukraine’s power network.
I also assess reports that U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner pressed Kyiv to halt refinery strikes, including an Axios-sourced allegation of possible intelligence-sharing restrictions that the U.S. side denied. The Ukraine war is beginning to resemble the Korean conflict in five consequential ways: North Korean forces are now directly involved; escalation fears continue to restrain Ukraine’s partners; the war could end in an armistice rather than a peace treaty; the present front could harden into a permanent armed boundary; and Ukraine could become Europe’s long-term frontier between rival blocs.
I also examine Ukraine’s effort to secure Starlink access for strikes against Russian missile launchers, Mykhailo Fedorov’s post-government plans, Ukraine’s urgent need for Patriot interceptors, Europe’s preparations for another difficult winter, and growing evidence that Western governments are planning for a conflict—or confrontation—that could last years.
The Korean analogy is imperfect. Ukraine is an independent country resisting Russian occupation, not one half of a state divided by competing postwar powers. But the emerging military and geopolitical structure is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

Ukraine's long-range campaign appears to be entering a new phase. Overnight strikes targeted oil refineries, pumping stations, military infrastructure, occupied Mariupol, and a shadow-fleet tanker in the Black Sea. At the same time, Ukrainian officials are discussing plans for missile systems capable of reaching 2,000 kilometers and the mass production of a new air-defense missile designed as a lower-cost alternative to the Patriot system.
Meanwhile, Russia continues its large-scale drone attacks against Ukrainian cities, even as battlefield progress remains limited. The contrast is becoming increasingly clear: Russia is trying to wear Ukraine down, while Ukraine is expanding its ability to strike deeper into Russia's military and energy infrastructure.
The bigger question is whether these trends point toward a fundamentally different stage of the war.

HUGE STRIKES LAST NIGHT. I examine the reported overnight Ukrainian strike wave against Russian industrial and logistics targets: FirePoint’s claimed FP-5 Flamingo missile hits on the Volgograd Promkets chemical facility, a fire at Rosneft’s Saratov oil refinery, damage at Saratov’s Ozon logistics hub, and a reported AN-196 Luty strike on the Azot chemical plant in Berezniki, Perm Krai. The strategic question is whether attacks on refining, chemical inputs, warehousing, and air traffic can impose compounding costs on Russia’s war-supporting economy.
I also compare Russian claims of 777 intercepted Ukrainian drones with open-source estimates nearer 320, and assess Russia’s own overnight attack: 161 drones and an S-800 Banderol, according to Ukraine, with deadly consequences in Pavlohrad. I examine the reported Trump-Putin diesel arrangement against the backdrop of Ukraine’s long-range campaign against Russian refining. Ukrainian officials cited in this episode say more than 51% of Russia’s oil-refining capacity has been put out of action, while Trump said Putin would supply more than 3,000 tons of diesel immediately and another 500 in November. I compare those volumes with U.S. diesel consumption and explain why the practical price effect appears limited—even as the political and financial signal to Moscow could matter.

I examine the reported large-scale Ukrainian strike on Moscow and the gap between the scale of the attack and Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin’s claim that more than 1,600 UAVs were repelled. Monitoring sources estimated roughly 400 Ukrainian drones, while footage and reports indicated fires at the Moscow oil refinery and major damage at the Sofino logistics complex. The refinery reportedly processes about 11 million tons annually and supplies a significant share of Moscow’s fuel market.
I also assess the strategic purpose of a multi-layered operation reportedly involving FP-1, RZ-100, Lyutyi, Flamingo, and other systems. Beyond the refinery, the attack disrupted roughly 400 flights and coincided with reported strikes on a Buk-M3 system, a Nebo-U radar, UAV production, and command targets. I examine Ukraine’s reported long-range strikes on Ufa in Bashkortostan, roughly 1,600 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, and why the Rosneft refining cluster matters. With combined crude-processing capacity exceeding 23 million tons annually, Ufa produces motor fuels, diesel, jet fuel, and other petroleum products. I also track reported strikes on bridges near Polohy, a Kasta 2E2 low-altitude radar station, and a UAV command post—targets tied directly to Russian logistics, air defense, and force movement.
I then assess the political dimension of the reported mass drone attack during Russia’s elections. Moscow’s airports reportedly closed, hundreds of flights were canceled, mobile networks were disrupted, and claims emerged that air-raid warnings were suppressed. Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed 1,951 Ukrainian drones and eight missiles; I explain why that figure warrants caution. Russia’s elections have begun, but Ukraine is making the war increasingly difficult for Putin to hide from Russian voters.
In this video, I examine a major overnight Ukrainian drone operation against Russia. Open-source tracking estimated that approximately 410 drones were moving into Russian territory, including toward Moscow Oblast. Rostov came under another large-scale attack, energy infrastructure was hit, and a critical processing unit at the Yaroslavl refinery reportedly stopped operating.
Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed that 629 Ukrainian drones were intercepted. That figure sharply conflicts with the open-source estimate of approximately 410, although the numbers may cover different reporting periods or categories.
Ukraine also reported strikes against the Saki Airfield, an Orion drone ground-control station, a UAV launch facility, ammunition storage, and Russian logistics depots.
I then compare Ukraine’s attacks on Russian military and energy infrastructure with Russia’s continuing strikes on Ukrainian residential buildings, schools, medical facilities, shops, and other civilian locations. Finally, I examine battlefield evidence suggesting that Russian forces are struggling in areas where Moscow expected to advance.
Putin may be able to control the election. Controlling what Russian voters see and understand about his war is becoming much harder.

I examine the reported Ukrainian strikes that reached from Sochi and Novorossiysk to Makhachkala, Dagestan—Russia’s only ice-free deep-water port on the Caspian Sea. Makhachkala is described as a key Russia-Iran logistics node for military-related cargo, including components and Shahed-type attack UAVs. Ukraine also reported damage to fuel-oil storage in Novorossiysk and three Russian vessels: the Admiral Essen frigate, the Pyotr Morgunov landing ship, and a Zelenodolsk-class small minesweeper.
I also look at the reported 3,000-kilometer FB-1 drone strike on a Siberian gas-processing facility, along with strikes on radar, UAV, command, and ammunition sites. The strategic question is whether Russia can defend an immense rear area while concentrating air-defense assets around Moscow, favored locations, and the front. I close with Russia’s overnight UAV attacks on Ukraine, including the Olena sunflower-oil plant and a reported double-tap strike on rescuers in Dnipro.

Russia has reportedly suffered its worst single day of 2026—and its sixth-worst day of the entire war.
In this video, I examine Ukraine’s battlefield gains, the reported 1,960 Russian casualties, and an extraordinary overnight strike campaign involving approximately 500 Ukrainian drones. Ukraine reportedly hit aircraft at a military airfield in Rostov, damaged a major oil-processing unit at the Yaroslavl refinery, and struck Russian air defenses, logistics sites, ammunition facilities, and troop concentrations.
Russia also launched another major attack against Ukraine, striking apartment buildings, energy infrastructure, educational facilities, and humanitarian warehouses. At least 18 people were reportedly injured in Kyiv, including children.
The larger story is that Ukraine is combining battlefield counterattacks with sustained attacks against Russia’s logistical and economic infrastructure. The war is increasingly being shaped by drones, autonomous guidance, and the ability to destroy expensive conventional systems with relatively inexpensive weapons.
Did Russia just experience its worst day of the year—or are the raw numbers obscuring what is actually happening on the battlefield?
