Garry Kasparov is asking the question NATO still hasn’t answered: if Western forces could help shoot down Iranian missiles headed for Israel, why not Russian missiles headed for Ukraine?
That question comes as Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan warns that if Russia reaches a survival-level crisis, Moscow could turn to whatever “last resort” it has available.
Meanwhile, Russia launched major attacks on Odesa and Zhytomyr, damaging energy infrastructure, homes, and a German-owned automotive plant employing roughly 3,500 people. Ukraine answered by destroying a long-targeted Russian S-400 system near Gelendzhik and striking additional Russian air-defense and military targets.
President Zelenskyy says every Russian strike will be answered and that the campaign against Russian oil is becoming increasingly painful for Moscow. Magyar then lays out his five conditions for how this war ultimately ends: Russia must lose the financial, military, logistical, manpower, and political capacity to continue.

I examine the economic stresses surrounding Russia’s September 2026 Duma election and what Putin may do after securing the mandate he seeks. Reports this week pointed to fuel queues, the release of gasoline reserves ahead of voting, corporate-bond defaults reportedly up 63% year over year, and a 12% decline in Russian travel-agency demand.
I also look at the agricultural dislocation: sunflower prices have fallen amid a 50% export duty, while industry sources describe wheat exports as down at least 60%. The government’s proposed purchase of 3 million tons of grain is far below the 10 million tons analysts say may be needed in the south. I examine an extraordinary day of reported Ukrainian operations: strikes on four oil depots in Krasnodar Krai, defense plants in Tula and Voronezh, and Russian drone, radar, electronic-warfare, air-defense, and maritime assets. Ukraine says seven refineries were hit over the preceding week at ranges of up to 1,600 kilometers behind the front. I assess why sustained pressure on fuel distribution, air defense, and drone infrastructure could impose costs well beyond any single strike.
I also break down Operation Vivaldi near Liman, where Ukraine’s 3rd Army Corps says it captured more than 250 Russian personnel after trapping forces west of the Zherebets River. Ukraine endured an extremely dangerous day of Russian attacks stretching from western regions to the front-line areas, with ballistic strikes hitting Odesa and parts of the city losing power. President Zelenskyy warned that Russia is preparing to intensify attacks on Ukraine’s infrastructure as the country moves toward fall and winter.
