Magyar Birds and Delta: Ukraine’s Drone Ecosystem Challenges Russia’s Winter Strategy
Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces: The Leadership Lesson Behind Russia’s Reported Bounty
Can Patriot Interceptors and Delta Help Ukraine Withstand Russia’s Winter Pressure?

I examine reports that Russia has offered a $20 million bounty for information on Robert “Magyar” Brovdi, commander of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces, and why he has become such a high-value target. Drawing on Wall Street Journal reporting, I focus on the operational system behind Magyar Birds: Ukraine’s Delta battlefield-management network, which links drone crews, sensors, strike platforms, map-based target alerts, and post-mission data.

The larger lesson is not simply that drones matter. It is that cheap, rapidly adaptable systems can gain power when paired with decentralized decisions and fast feedback. I also assess Russia’s reported winter strategy of long-range missile and drone attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure; Kyiv’s stated resilience preparations and interceptor shortfalls; Kaja Kallas’s call for European states to transfer Patriot interceptors; and the political pressures in Germany and France that Moscow may hope will erode support for Ukraine.

Today, the biggest news is coming from the Orikhiv direction.

Here, Ukrainian artillery delivered a devastating counterbattery barrage on Russian guns east of Orikhiv. Geolocated footage shows Ukrainians detecting and destroying two S three self-propelled artillery guns in the town of Huliaipole. A follow-up strike with a fixed-wing strike drone ensured its destruction. Next a Russian two A sixty-five howitzer was hit and destroyed, as Ukrainians blew up the shelter it was positioned in, along with the artillery shells stored on site. Ukrainians did not limit themselves to artillery however, as a large operating base for Russian soldiers was hit by devastating fire, collapsing a full half of the building in on itself. Ukrainians continued destroying one artillery piece after the other, with high-altitude reconnaissance drones directing the fire from above. Ukrainians even destroyed a T fifty-five tank that Russians had driven into a residential house for shelter. Continuous losses of artillery pieces to Ukrainian counterbattery fire are evident as Russians are being forced to use a hotchpot of tanks, self-propelled, and towed artillery pieces instead of a unified artillery battery. In the end, Ukrainians successfully took out one tank, one self-propelled gun, and at least eleven Russian towed artillery pieces.

This means that Ukrainians have completely taken out the entire Russian artillery battalion stationed on the eastern flank of Orikhiv. The Russian artillery was positioned exceptionally close to the frontline, meant to provide far-reaching fire support to Russian units attempting to infiltrate and outflank Orikhiv from the east. With this destruction, Russian units here are now temporarily without artillery fire support that would allow them to strike Ukrainian positions indirectly. This lack of fire support has already opened a window that Ukrainians are taking full advantage of. Specifically, sources on the ground report that they have been able to successfully cut off Russian soldiers that had broken into the small town of Chervona Krinitsia. Russian soldiers here had recently staged a flag-planting operation, but are already coming under heavy Ukrainian drone fire.  It is important that the Russian presence here is eliminated because the town serves as a springboard for Russian infiltrators to cut off one of Orikhiv’s most important supply routes. Additionally, Ukrainian forces have even been able to recapture the tactically important town of Hirke, which Russians were similarly using as a springboard to widen their eastern pincer from.

In addition to the real tactical gains Ukrainians achieved by silencing the Russian artillery in the sector, a brand new evolution of artillery operations is being revealed. More and more, we see Ukrainian artillery brigades gaining significant drone strike capabilities. Notably, these drones are not the usual FPV kamikaze or bomber drones necessarily, but fixed-wing strike drones that share or exceed the range of conventional Ukrainian tube artillery. The reasoning is perfectly clear: precision-guided artillery munitions are expensive and GPS jammable, and for an unguided round to land on target it usually takes between ten and fifty shells depending on the range and gun firing it. Instead, a fixed-wing drone used on the frontline can usually do this on the first try, making them excel at modern counterbattery fire, where Ukrainian artillery units are tasked with taking out Russian artillery. They deliver enough of an explosive payload that takes these guns out of commission, as Still, they lack the sheer firepower and rapid delivery of an artillery shell landing on or near a soft target, along with a vulnerability to bad weather and jamming; meaning that conventional big guns are still king at suppression and heavy destruction. The expanded use of strike drones by Ukrainian artillery units shows that they have evolved and modernized by expanding their toolkit, but are still ready and able to perform artillery’s core tasks.

Overall, Ukraine’s modernized artillery brigades have massively advanced their counter-battery capabilities by allowing the drone revolution to take hold in them as well. Through this, they have completely silenced the Russian big guns on the eastern flank of Orikhiv, allowing Ukrainian soldiers on the ground to take advantage and cut off the eastern Russian pincer. Now it is time for Ukrainians to counterattack, destroy the Russian advances, and take back control of the sector that has stood strong ever since the outbreak of the Russian invasion.

Today, there is interesting news from the Liman direction.

Here, Ukraine’s Third Army Corps has used a series of unconventional battlefield tactics near Liman, with the most prominent one transforming an obsolete armored personnel carrier into a massive unmanned kamikaze vehicle to destroy a Russian strongpoint blocking the Ukrainian advance toward Nove.

The vehicle chosen was a BTR Sixty belonging to the Third Separate Assault Brigade. It was old, damaged, and no longer suitable for normal combat, but remained mobile. Instead of abandoning it, Ukrainian engineers installed cameras and a remote-control system, filled the armored vehicle with explosives, and turned it into a giant ground kamikaze drone.

The target was a fortified Russian position interfering with a simultaneous Ukrainian assault into Nove, with Russian troops protected underground, meaning smaller explosive-carrying ground drones or bomber drones might only partially damage the position without completely destroying it, so Ukraine needed something significantly more powerful.

The full-sized BTR provided exactly that, as its large internal volume allowed engineers to load a far greater quantity of explosives than any conventional ground drone could carry, while its armor and off-road mobility increased its chances of reaching the target. A reconnaissance drone followed overhead and helped correct its route as the unmanned vehicle approached the Russian position. The remote control meant no Ukrainian crew had to risk their lives during what was effectively a one-way mission. Once the BTR reached the strongpoint, it detonated, producing an explosion comparable in scale to the effect of a Kab glide bomb and destroyed the Russian stronghold, allowing the subsequent Ukrainian ground assault on Nove to proceed without hinder.

The Ukrainian NC Thirteen drone unit has also experimented within Operation Vivaldi by equipping small kamikaze ground robots with two disposable Bullspike grenade launchers. They were transported behind Russian lines by another unmanned platform before being released near enemy positions. They then approached the Russian fortifications in a building and fired their grenade launchers directly into them before finally moving closer and detonating themselves to finish off everyone inside.

The psychological effect of such operations is substantial, as Russian soldiers up to ten kilometers behind the frontline would normally never expect to suddenly receive short-range direct fire. Grenades arriving from nearby therefore create the impression that Ukrainian infantry has penetrated deep into the rear, causing additional panic and chaos among the Russian troops.

The Russian commanders, after receiving reports of apparent Ukrainian assault groups, can redirect reinforcements or react to a penetration that does not actually exist, while the Ukrainian robots can suppress and destroy the Russian positions and set up an ambush for the coming additional Russian troops.

At the same time, the Ukrainians also started using hand-held reconnaissance drones to provide surveillance, guidance, and tactical flexibility, while infantry moved forward after the Russian defenses were already disrupted. That creativity has become particularly important in a battlefield dominated by drones, where conventional frontal assaults can produce enormous casualties.

Overall, Operation Vivaldi has demonstrated the functional value of the Ukrainian drone experiments, as the Third Army Corps is increasingly pushing machines into the most dangerous part of the assault first, preserving soldiers for clearing and consolidation. By combining massive unmanned breaching vehicles with smaller armed ground robots designed to create confusion behind Russian lines, Ukrainian forces break fortified positions, generate chaos, and then move assault troops against an enemy already shaken before direct combat even begins. Together, these tactics demonstrate how the Third Army Corps is reimagining drone warfare during Operation Vivaldi and is adapting different machines to specific battlefield problems.

Today, there is dangerous news from Poland.

Here, the story surrounding Russia’s crashed TU Ninety-Five strategic bomber has suddenly acquired an even wilder dimension. After the aircraft went down in Russia’s Amur region killing six crew members, many suspected internal sabotage. However, General Ireneusz Nowak, Operational Commander of the Polish Armed Forces, has just publicly remarked that this particular aircraft had fired the KH one-hundred-and-one missile that entered and hit Polish territory near Tarnawa. That statement immediately generated speculation about whether the sabotage causing the crash was solely Ukrainian or had a more Polish connection. Despite Russian reporting that has pointed toward technical failure, the simultaneous failure of three engines shortly after takeoff are reported as highly, highly unusual by military experts. The comments of the most senior Polish military commander made the sabotage operation all but official, as analysts state such public statements from him are rare and always serve as a way to deliver a subtle warning.

The Tarnawa incident at the end of July explains the Polish reaction, as a Russian Kh-One-hundred-and-one cruise missile penetrated Polish airspace during Russia’s attack on Ukraine and crashed near Tarnawa in the Lublin Region. Polish military officials subsequently said they were convinced that the missile had been deliberately directed into Poland rather than accidentally straying across the border.

And this was hardly an isolated episode, as Russian strikes have repeatedly approached Poland’s border, including attacks around the Yahodyn border crossing. Recently, a Russian Mi-Eight helicopter entered Polish territory from Kaliningrad, penetrating approximately three hundred meters and remaining inside Polish airspace for forty-two seconds before turning back. Poland’s military explicitly described the incident as another Russian attempt to test its air defenses, with fighter jets consequently scrambled during Russian attacks on western Ukraine. However, Russia’s pressure on Poland has extended beyond the airspace.

A fire damaged the power infrastructure and backup generator of a Starlink ground station in central Poland supporting connectivity that extends into Ukraine. Polish Deputy Prime Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski called the incident sabotage designed to disrupt communications, especially targeting the connectivity used by the Ukrainian military. Polish authorities have not identified the perpetrators responsible yet, although they place the incident within the pattern of hybrid warfare Poland faces from Russia.

As a result, Warsaw’s response is now becoming substantially harder, and beginning in October, Poland is changing its air-defense procedures so hostile aerial objects will no longer necessarily require visual identification before engagement. Instead, commanders can rely on combined information including radar tracks, trajectory, speed, restricted-airspace penetration, and identification data with the straightforward purpose of reducing the time between detecting a potentially hostile object and authorizing its destruction.

That changes the calculation behind future Russian incursions, because a missile or drone entering Polish airspace can face a faster engagement decision, while another Russian aircraft repeating the Mi-Eight’s penetration risks encountering a Polish defense system operating under more permissive procedures, as Poland is effectively removing ambiguity as protection for unidentified intruders.

Against that background, the Polish army commander’s TU Ninety-Five comment carries considerably greater symbolic weight by publicly connecting the loss of an irreplaceable Russian strategic aircraft with a missile that was deliberately fired into his country. Coming from the officer responsible for Poland’s operational military response, Russia can hardly ignore the message, as Poland’s posture is therefore changing from repeated warnings toward hard deterrence. After missiles, drones, border strikes, aircraft incursions, and sabotage against critical infrastructure, the Polish army is shortening its engagement procedures and making clear that further violations will produce consequences, and that Poland will not accept Russian aggression.

Overall, whether the Tu-Ninety-Five crash was caused by Ukrainian or Polish sabotage remains unresolved, but what is no longer ambiguous is Poland’s response to Russia’s escalating pressure. Polish aircraft are now ready for combat duty and are scrambled each time Russia attacks western Ukraine, while their engagement rules are tightening and the Polish senior military leadership is signaling publicly that incidents involving Polish territory will not simply disappear from the ledger.

I examine Ukraine’s reported first combat use of the FP-7 tactical ballistic missile amid a major overnight drone and missile campaign against targets across Russia. With a reported range of up to 300 kilometers and a payload of up to 200 kilograms, the FP-7 could put Russia’s dense near-border logistics network, ammunition sites, airfields, and glide-bomb infrastructure at greater risk—if Ukraine can sustain serial production and employ it effectively.

I also break down reported strikes on the Samara oil-pumping and petrochemical complex, the Lukoil Volgograd refinery, and facilities in Voronezh, Nizhny Novgorod, Krasnodar, and elsewhere. On the defensive side, I assess Russia’s 108-drone attack on Ukraine, F-16 cannon intercepts, and Ukraine’s efforts to scale interceptor drones. Finally, I look at September’s battlefield figures: Russia reportedly seized 175 square kilometers but lost 256, while suffering 46,230 reported casualties.

Ukraine has unleashed a week of heavy strikes on Russia as a Volgograd went up in flames for the third time. Ukraine unleashed the new FP7 ballistic missile as targets in Samara, Perm, Rostov-on-Don, Ulyanovsk and an ammunition depot in Krasnozavodsk, Moscow were blitzed. Jerome Starkey brings you the latest news from the War in Ukraine as the 3rd Army Corps continues to make significant gains in Lyman, employing unorthodox tactics to break Russian lines. Today, there are interesting updates from the Liman direction.

Here, Russian reinforcements attempting to stabilize the collapsing situation east of the Zherebets River are increasingly being destroyed before they can even reach the frontline. Ukraine’s Muramasa drone unit, operating as part of the Third Army Corps, has released footage showing strikes against Russian columns moving through the Kreminna area, demonstrating how Ukrainian forces are extending their campaign deeper into the Russian rear.

The targets are not limited to large convoys, as Ukrainian operators are systematically hunting individual vehicles, groups of soldiers, firing positions, and logistical assets moving toward Russian defensive positions. This creates a serious problem because Ukraine is simultaneously applying pressure toward and across the Zherebets.

As a result, every reinforcement vehicle destroyed around Kreminna represents troops or equipment that cannot replace losses farther west, with entire columns wiped out while still moving through the Russian rear, long before they can reach the positions they were dispatched to reinforce. Instead of fresh troops arriving to stabilize the frontline, Ukrainian drones are turning the roads leading toward it into a continuous attrition zone where Russian columns can be detected, tracked, and destroyed while still in transit.

However, according to the Third Army Corps commander Andriy Biletsky, this is only the beginning. During a meeting with captured Russian soldiers, Biletsky told them they were fortunate to have surrendered now rather than later. He explained that Ukrainian forces would continue fighting until Russian troops had been driven from Ukrainian territory, before adding an ominous warning that his troops have a surprise prepared for the Russians over the coming two months.

Some indications of what is happening are already emerging, as Ukrainian troops are capturing not merely ordinary infantrymen, but increasingly valuable military specialists like mortar crew members, drone operators, electronic-warfare personnel, and other soldiers responsible for maintaining the support network behind Russian assault formations. Losing these personnel is considerably more damaging than simply losing another infantryman, which Russia usually sends forward in one-way suicide attacks.

Despite Russia replacing ordinary assault infantry at enormous human cost, replacing experienced and technically trained soldiers is much harder, as such specialists require training, experience, and integration into functioning battlefield networks.

Every captured drone operator means fewer Russian drones are searching for Ukrainian assault groups, while every missing mortar specialist removes another source of immediate fire support. Every lost electronic-warfare operator potentially creates another opening through which Ukrainian drones can penetrate Russian positions and logistics, as confirmed by the footage from the Muramasa unit around Kreminna.

As a result, even now Ukrainian drones are operating deep enough behind Russian lines to find and destroy moving reinforcement vehicles. If Russian electronic-warfare coverage, reconnaissance, and command structures continue to deteriorate, these rear areas will become progressively less protected, allowing Ukrainian operators to extend their kill zone farther east.

Crucially, it remains unclear where all these Russian specialists are being captured, as some could have been trapped during the destruction of Russian positions west of the Zherebets, while others may have been captured during Ukrainian raids farther east. That uncertainty itself is significant because the Third Army Corps has again imposed extensive operational silence over its continuing actions.

Captured Russians reinforce the picture of increasing organizational breakdown, as they describe being abandoned by their commanders, receiving few or no reinforcements, and frequently operating with inadequate supplies, as the problem extends beyond battlefield casualties into command, logistics and unit cohesion.

Overall, the situation east of the Zherebets would become even more dangerous for Russia, as reinforcement columns are already being destroyed around Kreminna while specialists disappear from frontline formations and Ukrainian raids continue under operational silence. If General Biletsky’s promised surprise represents the next stage of Operation Vivaldi, Russia may discover that the collapse west of the river was not the end of Ukraine’s offensive operation, but merely the preparation for something considerably larger and more painful.

Today, the biggest news comes from the Vovchansk direction, where Ukrainian forces are pushing back against Russia’s western pincer.

The operation began inside the forests near Synelnykove, where Ukrainian reconnaissance troops moved directly against a network of Russian dugouts hidden beneath the tree cover. The footage shows Ukrainian troops clearing one dugout after another, as taking the first shelter still left nearby Russian soldiers in position and forced the assault group to keep moving through the forest until the entire defensive pocket was cleared. Once the fighting ended, Ukrainian troops occupied the captured positions and collected rifles, documents, and mobile phones, giving them access to messages and unit locations about the Russian forces operating in the area. This removed another Russian foothold inside the forest and gave Ukrainian forces control of the dugouts that had allowed Russian troops to remain concealed west of Synelnykove.

The fighting took place roughly five kilometers southwest of central Vovchansk, in the forests immediately west of Synelnykove, where Russian forces are trying to move around the Ukrainian defenses. By advancing through these forests, the Russians are trying to widen their western bridgehead around Vovchansk and push deeper behind the Ukrainian positions, giving them more room to expand the offensive south and southwest of the city. The forest is well suited for this approach, as small Russian groups can move under cover, establish dugouts, and gradually extend their presence without crossing large areas of exposed ground. Clearing these positions removes footholds that Russian troops could use to push the western pincer farther around Vovchansk.

The biggest Russian mistake is that their command is already treating scattered infiltration groups and isolated footholds as consolidated territorial gains. Just as around Lyman, Russian maps are showing control over areas where only a handful of soldiers have managed to penetrate, creating a gap of more than twenty kilometers between the line claimed by Russian commanders and the positions they actually hold. In the forests west of Synelnykove, this creates problems almost immediately, as Russian commanders can send reinforcements and supplies along routes they already consider secure, even though Ukrainian troops are still able to move through parts of the same area. Drone teams and artillery can also be assigned according to positions that exist on the map rather than on the ground, leaving forward Russian groups with less support than expected. This turns the apparent depth of the western pincer into a weakness, as Ukrainian forces can move through the gaps and attack isolated Russian footholds one by one.

Ukraine is now exploiting that weakness by systematically clearing the forest, with reconnaissance identifying isolated Russian positions before assault groups move in to clear the dugouts and use the captured ground to support further movement. Once one pocket is removed, nearby Russian groups become more exposed and harder to support, allowing the Ukrainian clearing operation to continue deeper into the forest. This prevents Russian infiltrators from joining together into a continuous defensive line and forces Russian commanders to send additional troops back into areas they had already counted as captured. Instead of using those footholds to keep extending the western pincer, Russia is being forced to secure the ground behind them, turning the battle west of Vovchansk into Operation Vivaldi two point zero.

Overall, Ukraine’s clearing operations west of Synelnykove are forcing Russia to properly secure areas it had already claimed as captured, which means linking its scattered positions and protecting the routes between them. This increases the burden of maintaining the western pincer and makes its forward groups harder to support whenever the line on Russian maps moves ahead of the troops actually holding the ground. The same mechanism defined Operation Vivaldi around Lyman, where Ukraine exploited the gap between infiltration and genuine control before Russian forces could consolidate their advance. Russia now has to choose between slowing the push to close those gaps or continuing forward while leaving exposed positions behind for Ukrainian troops to clear.
